Surviving The Weather Time Blues

It’s no surprise that the change in weather brings about a change in people’s personality, but what is it exactly that makes our moods change and leave us craving something different? That’s the question that leaves our minds circling for an answer, puzzling us to no end.

Seasonal Affective Disorder can occur for many different reasons and in all types of people. This doesn’t mean you need to rush out to your doctors office and demand a bulk prescription of medication but instead, simply re-evaluating your location and what the weather is like. The perfect remedy could simply be unpacking that bathing suit from the back of your closet, booking a flight to your getaway location, and enjoying a few days in the healthy, warm sunshine.

Seasonal Affective Disorder

Living in Florida, I’ve recently learned first hand that I experience seasonal depression. This doesn’t mean that I suffer from depression and need medication but simply that I crave the warm weather and the way that it lightens my mood. Being in the sun is proven to lighten your mood and make you feel healthier. According to Discovery Health’s blog on Seasonal Affective Disorder, “most people feel better in the summer, when the days are longer, sunnier, and warmer.” Because of this, people are more likely to participate in outdoor activities, such as running, walking, or any form of exercise. When people are forced to remain inside, say because of a spontaneous snow storm or an increasing amount of rain, they are less likely to maintain an exercise schedule and more likely to spend some good ole quality time on the couch. So before you settle into that favorite spot with a blanket and a movie, consider alternative activities you could be doing besides catching up on the latest television series.

And remember… seasonal depression is seasonal. It won’t last forever and with the right amount of time (and cash) you can solve all your problems with a quick getaway! :) In some cases however, Seasonal Affective Disorder can be more serious than others. In this case medication may be prescribed by your doctor and alternative forms of treatment may be discussed.
