I went into my freshman year thinking the “freshman fifteen” was a total myth. I had been petite my entire life and could not imagine gaining weight. As soon as I moved into my apartment, I started eating out every day for almost every meal, and buying cupcakes and cookies as snacks. Your own place, no rules, right? Sadly, our parents were right, and I was not prepared for what was about to come.

Around December of my freshman year’s fall semester, I had gained 20 pounds! I made it my new years resolution to nip the weight gain in the bud, so I started eating healthier meals. Sure enough, I began to see progress and started to feel good about myself again. This is a grocery list of a few healthy food items that you should be buying to not only avoid the Freshman fifteen, but to look and feel better.

  1. Spinach. This leafy green is perfect because it is low in calories but high in nutrients that are essential for overall health. Sprinkled with a bit of kosher salt and lemon, a bowl of spinach can serve as a side to almost every meal. Since it does not have an overwhelming taste, it can also be blended with fruits into a yummy smoothie without overpowering it. It is an easy way to get your basic vitamins and still keep your calories on track.
  2. Sweet Potatoes. These gems are not only tastier than regular potatoes, but they are more nutritious. They are an excellent source of vitamins, and a healthy complex carbohydrate you can eat after a good workout to put on lean muscle. If you appreciate a sweet and salty combination, then pair this with chicken and spinach, and you have a tasty healthy dinner.
  3. Whole wheat pasta. This has become my favorite staple to always have in my pantry. When you replace normal pasta with whole wheat pasta, you get the necessary whole grains for your day instead of useless carbs. Pasta is so easy to whip up, so it is a good alternative to a big meal when you don’t feel like cooking. Just pour a bit of tomato sauce and a pinch of Parmesan cheese and enjoy without the guilt!
  4. Oatmeal. If you need a quick breakfast idea that is healthy and tasty, look no further. It is a great way to get all your nutrients and get you going in the morning. The strawberries and cream Quaker instant oatmeal is my personal favorite. Dice some fresh strawberries on top for an extra burst of flavor and freshness.
  5. Avocados. “Nature’s mayonnaise,” as they call it and rightfully so. This natural jewel goes great over whole wheat toast, a couple of slices of tomato, salt and pepper. Also, over whole wheat bread with a slice of lean deli turkey. The possibilities are endless. They are loaded with healthy fats, and nutritious benefits, and might probably be the tastiest item on this list.
