Everyone knows that January is the time most people decide to start their health and fitness new years resolution. As the years pass, people are becoming more and more aware of the importance of a healthy life. It is not 2005 anymore, when everyone had an extra large coke and big mac from Mcdonald’s for lunch. Eleven years later, juicing and eating organic products, even vegan-ism is now the trend. Making this adjustment can be tough physically, but even tougher mentally. Resisting cravings and getting up for the gym every day takes a special kind of person. The good news is that anyone can be this person if they put their minds to it. These are some ways in which you can facilitate your healthy and fit new years resolution.
1. Surround yourself with people with the same goals as you. Unless your willpower is ridiculously strong, chances are you will give into temptation if the people around you have unhealthy habits. In college, your roommates are going to be the people that are constantly going to be around you, so it is important for all of you to have the same mindset. It will make things easier on you if you could talk them into it. This way, you can all prepare meals together, go to the gym, and most importantly, keep each other motivated.
2. Throw out all the junk food you have. Even if you just bought a pack of pop tarts yesterday that you haven’t opened yet, throw it out. It is almost impossible to eat healthy when there is junk food laying around taunting and teasing you. If you are like most of us that simply can’t resist, then you only have one option; throwing it all away so that you have no choice but to eat healthy. Another method that works is spending all your food money at once, so that even if you want to eat out or treat yourself with something, you won’t be able to.
3. Find a set time you can go to the gym every day. Working the gym into your daily schedule is important, but what will really make an improvement in your ability to get up and go is if you can find a set time that works for you every day. This way, your life remains organized and it is way easier than trying to squeeze in a different time for it every day. Also, it makes it easier for you to plan your meals accordingly.
4. Find other ways to be active that don’t involve the gym. Once you incorporated the gym into your life and you make a habit out of it, you can start incorporating different places and activities. Take a dance class once in a while, or go rollerblading in the park. Sign up for an outdoor yoga class, or go hiking with friends. This is a good way to be active without even noticing that you are putting work in, because you are having fun in the process.
5. Remember it is a lifestyle change, not a diet. Remember that a month long diet to cut away some of your fat is not going to work. It may work temporarily but in the long run, studies show that most people end up regaining the fat that they lost. It is important to remember that you have to cut out junk food from your diet and participate in an active lifestyle permanently if you want permanent results.
